Just8 Glasgow Based Food Blog – New Restaurant Review! Ristorante Teatro, Charing Cross, Glasgow

GLASGOW HAS ITS FAIR SHARE OF GREAT TRATTORIAS, many of which are on my go-to list when in need of some good Italian sustenance. Well, I have just discovered another to add to the list. Restaurant Teatro is located on Elmbank Street, opposite the Griffin pub, and very close to the King’s Theatre. It is a cosy basement restaurant styled with a mix of modern design – cream leather booth seating – and old-style decor in the shape of stained-glass windows and dark-wood furnishings. But this mix of old and new works, giving it a up-to-date yet historical feel.

The quality of the food surpassed our expectations. Our sumptuous starters of Insalata Caprese and Cappesante Piccolo (Fresh Shetland King Scallops and Italian Sausage) were beautifully crafted.  We felt that the Insalata Caprese would be difficult to recreate at home due to the quality and freshness of the ingredients, particularly the buffalo mozzarella cheese. The Cappesante Piccolo consisted of the most succulent scallops and well-seasoned Italian Sausage. Presentation of both were outstanding. And we were delighted by the portion size – not too big. Fabulous! Both were to be highly recommended. Our compliments to the chef.

For our main courses we had Tagliatelle Alla Teatro (Fresh Mushrooms & Truffle Oil) and the Spaghetti Con Polpette (Homemade Meatballs). Both portions were generous and we couldn’t finish them. However, I think many people would find the portion size to be as expected in an Italian restaurant – so I’m not complaining. Both were very tasty. The meatballs were perfectly cooked and well seasoned. The Tagliatelle had a delicious truffle oil sauce.

Most desserts at Ristorante Teatro are homemade (apart from the ice-cream). We went for the Rich Italian Chocolate Pot with Amaretti Biscuit and Tiramisu Classico in a glass. Particular mention for the Chocolate Pot which was scraped clean – says it all!

This restaurant represents good value for money. We dined out with a deal from Bookatable.com. This offer consisted of three courses plus a bottle of Prosecco / wine for £29 per person – though there are many other offers available including Pre-Theatre, lunch, Christmas Day and Hogmanay deals.

Its close proximity to the King’s makes it an excellent choice for some actual ‘pre theatre’ dining. It would also make a great venue for a Christmas night out as there is something for everyone on the menu and a cosy ambience. Or even a good catch-up over a long lunch.

Service was friendly and attentive. Our drinks were re-filled without us even noticing. There was always a pleasant song playing in the background at an appropriate volume. A nice surprise was the free champagne cocktail with the dessert.

I would definitely recommend this cosy Italian restaurant close to the King’s Theatre. A quality establishment in the Charing Cross area of Glasgow.
